Our Department
The Emergency Department at St. Joseph’s Medical Center – Stockton provides a dedicated team of physicians, nurses, residents, staff, and on-call specialists to treat critically ill and injured adults and children. The department has the highest volume and acuity of all the hospitals within the Dignity Health system and is one of the highest volume departments in Northern California with approximately 110,000 unique patient visits annually.
The Emergency Department is a STEMI receiving center, Stroke receiving center, and the largest Emergency Department in San Joaquin County. The department serves the diverse patient population of Stockton and the surrounding metropolitan area. The Emergency Department team provides an extraordinary level of knowledge, skill and compassion to every patient.

We have a robust Simulation Medicine program, with 2 main AV equipped SIM rooms, plus a newly designed OR-SIM room and ability to expand into an additional room for SIM experiences. We regularly incorporate SIM into didactics with both high and low-fidelity scenarios. We have 2 SIM fellowship trained faculty and a Simulation Manager supporting these educational activities. Our residents have participated in local and regional SIM competitions, recently winning 5 of 6 cases at 2022 CalACEP AdvancED conference SIM competition, and also placing 2nd in the 2022 Western SAEM SIM-WARS. We regularly create and host multi-disciplinary MCI drills and cross-specialty mock -codes.

We have an active and energetic US team at St Joe’s. Our US training includes time in Intern boot-camp, a dedicated 4 week block during PGY1, and dedicated US teaching sessions regularly during didactics. Residents also experience longitudinal US education during their residency training. All of our faculty and residents routinely incorporate US into their regular patient care. Our US program is supported by 3 core faculty members who are fellowship trained. We launched our US fellowship in 2022. Our US teaching program provides an integral service across all GME programs and also provides education to our nursing staff for US-guided IVs.

St. Joseph’s Medical Center has been contributing to healthcare advancement through research and quality improvement for many decades. All of our residents engage in scholarly work, research activity, and quality improvement projects during their residency training supported by faculty mentors across all specialties and lead by our GME research director. We have an onsite Research & Quality Committee (RAQC), research incubator sessions and additional support from on-site bio-statisticians. We host an annual Resident Research Symposium.
