We're Serious About Wellness 〰️

Department Wellness Initiative

In 2022, the Emergency Department leadership launched a wellness campaign for both faculty and residents.

We participate quarterly in the Maslach Burnout Assessment as well as the PERMA Wellness assessment to assess wellness and burnout amongst residents and physicians. Each shift, we are asked to complete 4 tasks that fall into each of the following categories: Physical, Emotional, Social, and Intellectual. These areas have been validated for improving overall wellness. We are continually measuring responses in an effort to increase overall physical and mental health and wellness amongst our entire department.

  • I completed 5 minutes of exercise AND spent 2 minutes outside.

  • I checked in with myself AND checked in with someone else.

  • I expressed gratitude or thanks to someone.

  • I learned something new AND shared it with someone.

how we get there together

GME Wellness Committee

GME has established a Wellness Committee which creates activities and ensures resources are available for residents. The committee is compromised of multi-specialty faculty members in addition to having resident involvement.

The Committee is dedicated to both resident and physician wellness, and offers many resources including:

  • Quarterly wellness and moral distress rounds for residents to address these difficult topics they encounter during their training

  • Extended physician ‘afternoons of wellness’ which includes stories of coping, wellness promotion, burnout mitigation and self-care

  • Badge-buddies with critical access numbers and distribution of all EAP and mental -health resources

  • Wellness Resource Wall in our GME building detailing community social events, community resources, standard hospital resources, and GME community activity board

Resident Retreats

Each year residents have 2 retreats where they can openly voice concerns and engage in active program building; as well as team activities and bonding activities (and a lot of fun).

These retreats are free from all clinical duties to ensure everyone can join.
